Even without actual integration with your IDE you are able to get benefit from xdebug on your development machine:
- overloads var_dump() and beautifies the output
- turn off "@" operator
- track headers that are already send by script with header() function
- xdebug_debug_zval() dumps variables information like ref status & ref counts
- provides stack traces
- provides execution / function calls traces (lots of different possibilities to collect information)
